Reading Group

Ages 4 – 12

Small guided reading groups are organized based on age and level. Classes are taught by the Executive Director and trained interns at libraries, schools, and charitable organizations.

Objective

Our objective is for students to improve by at least one reading level every four months of regular attendance.

Accountability

Pre and post assessments are given in order to measure our objective. Assessments are administered internally by reading instructors.

Curriculum and Resources

Guided reading lessons follow current research regarding best practices. Classes meet twice per week. Phonemic awareness, phonics, grammar, and writing are taught in connection to a text. Pre-reading lessons for the youngest students are hands-on and age appropriate. We use the leveled library from Reading A-Z, which includes digital activities and a library for students to access at home. Students are also given one physical book per week.

Did You Know?

Struggling readers often lack phonemic awareness skills, such as the ability to rhyme. Additionally, dyslexia is estimated to affect at least 20% of the population. Guided reading lessons include phonemic awareness activities and utilize a variety of hands-on strategies for dyslexia, such as movement and other sensory activities.
